The AATG breathes new life into Lord Byron’s masterpiece The Prisoner of Chillon, the classic poem, chronicling the imprisonment of a Genevois monk, François Bonivard, from 1532 to 1536. Exploring themes and drawing lessons from these fine words: the love and respect of nature, the importance of retaining courage in one’s convictions, but also that the answers to society’s challenges are often collective, requiring tolerance, moderation and wisdom rather than violence, repression and dehumanisation.

Famously described as “mad, bad and dangerous to know,” Lord Byron wrote his 392-line poem in 1816, telling the story of Bonivard, a freedom fighter imprisoned at the Castle of Chillon in Switzerland.

It describes Bonivard’s agonizing martyrdom for his courageously defended religious beliefs. The AATG’s one act play is a unique adaptation of one of the most beautiful and powerful works in the English language.

After the interval, AATG will present a dramatic reading of another masterwork from fellow Romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, The Masque of Anarchy. Shelley penned his biting satire after being appalled by the vicious suppression, dubbed the ‘Peterloo Massacre,’ of a peaceful protest meeting at St Peter’s Field in Manchester. Shelley’s fever dream is perhaps the first modern statement of the principle of non-violent resistance.

This will be followed by a short Q&A with the Director.
